Excerpt from "Farmhouses and Cottages"

The lover of country life who looks over the rural areas of the United States may be struck by the odd style of our farm houses and buildings.  While they may be well-suited for living, there is a feeling that there is a lack in architectural design, method, and good taste.

It may be said that these agricultural dwellings have no architecture at all.  The correct systems, plans, and judgment in building over the years has been confined to our cities and towns of rapid growth.

Even the few buildings of the modern style that have been built in our farming districts have turned out to be failures.  They are certainly not what the farmers demanded.  The architects and builders have made futile attempts to learn the requirements of these buildings, and their inexperience can be seen.
