The Game

The clock was winding down.  I passed the ball to Rick, our star player.  If anyone was going to win this game, it was going to be Rick.

The noise from the crowd was deafening.  Rick dribbled towards the basket.  The defenders flocked towards him.  He went right.  He went left.  He couldn’t shake free of the opposing players.

The seconds on the scoreboard were ticking away.  Rick saw me open in the corner.  He passed the ball.  I caught it (much to my surprise).

I hadn’t scored a goal all game.  In fact, I stood on the floor only because of a twisted ankle to our starting forward.

The crowd was shouting, “Shoot the ball!”  It took a moment before I realized they were talking to me.  I heaved it towards the basket.  Suddenly, everything went as silent as a classroom during a final exam.

What happened next was beyond belief (my belief, anyway).  The ball went through the net.  The crowd erupted like a volcano.   I braced myself as my teammates ran in my direction…
